Yea, I've never had a problem getting a ride down on the cog (occasionally a jump seat). But I usually just hitch a ride down and give the driver about half of what a cog ride would cost. I too do the tour guide bit. A few weeks ago a group biking down the road rode the cog up with round trip tickets and one of them just gave me his return ticket. Ask around!
