Don't even get me started on the mile markers. At worst, I find them to be mentally demoralizing on the way down the mountain...and a complete waste of time and unnecessary at best. Maybe I'm wrong, but I can't ever remember seeing mile markers at any other Mountain/Trail race. At the Collegiate Peaks Trail Runs they have the mileage that you've covered posted at the aid stations but that's about it. The natural landmarks on Pikes Peak and Matt's Pace Calculator are much more useful! If you wanted to post a sign that was useful and encouraging it would be on the way down just after you go through the No Name aid station and up that nasty little hill and it would simply say "It's All Downhill from here!" Just sayin'!
